There is a time to create and a time to simply marvel at what has already been created, as God has left imprints of his eternal power and divine nature throughout creation. In fact, much of our work can be seen as bringing revelation to the truth, goodness, and beauty God has already in place in his world. And this becomes a humble act of faith – receiving the deep mysteries of God and trusting the wisdom they reveal.

Certainly, this work of revelation is what many good artists do. While they’re creative, their focus is less on making something new, as the heart of their craft is to make known the transcendent beauty already in existence. And many scientists do the same in their own right. While their science might lead to many creative inventions, much of their work is simply discovering the patterns already present in the world and humbly working with the grain of God’s universe.

Closer to home, we’re not trying to refashion our wife and kids into an image of our own making. We’re merely trying to reveal and bring out the image of God already there. Our stewardship requires us to see and contemplate what already is rather than attempt to create something new per se.  This might be true at work as well, as our leadership becomes less about reinventing the wheel, and more about understanding and bringing to light the underlying patterns that make things work.

Of course, we bear God’s creative spirit and there are times we long to bring something new into existence. But there’s wisdom in learning to discover the mysteries God has already embedded in his world for those with the eyes to see. This keeps us humble in our practice of love – always keeping our eyes on him rather than leaning on our own understanding.

In the end, learn to see, receive, and name the realities already present in God’s world – uncovering the divine mysteries that draw us closer to him.
