Healing Is More Than Feeling Less Shame

The point of healing for many is simply to no longer feel ashamed. But true healing is much more than this. It opens the door to becoming wholehearted and free – so rooted in who we are that shame no longer determines how we live. We’re not merely avoiding shame; we’re learning to drink deeply from the abundant life Christ came to give us.

This means allowing even our unfinished and undone parts to be seen. That can be unsettling at first, but our imperfections and shortcomings no longer have to define us. Just as we don’t need a perfect body to become comfortable in our own skin, living unashamed doesn’t mean we never fail, sin, feel embarrassed, or experience temptation.

The unashamed man is not flawless. He’s simply the man whose failures no longer get the final word in his story.

Nothing to Prove, Everything to Receive

He remembers who he is: a beloved son of God with nothing to prove and everything to receive. Instead of hiding his shame or desperately trying to prove his worth, he can gratefully receive what God has given him to enjoy.

Of course, this grace motivates him to continue doing what pleases God. But obedience is no longer merely a grim duty to endure. Life becomes an opportunity for joy, celebration, and delight. There are still hard things to face and struggles to overcome. But he also knows how to dance – to drink deeply from the beauty of life as he finds his way forward.

Free to Love, Be Known, and Enjoy Life

Jesus shows us the way. He invites us to take up our cross and follow Him, but He also invites us to the table. His ministry was marked not only by sacrifice, but by feasting, fellowship, celebration, and delight.

To live unashamed is to come out of hiding and allow ourselves to be seen. It is to surrender the elaborate fig leaves we’ve spent years protecting. And having done so, we become free to love without pretending, to be known without fear, and to fully enjoy the life God has given us.

We bring God glory when we live fully alive—as He intended—without shame.
