“Second verse, same as the first” feels like the theme to much of life. It often feels like all our many efforts don’t make much of a difference in the long run. Things continue as they always have been. But meaning can still be found in our everydayness even when it seems as if everything is pointless.
To be sure, many days it feels like we’re in a never-ending rat race and we often wonder what’s the point of it all. And this can leave us desperately trying to find meaning in everything we do. We rightly sense we’re part of a much larger story and so we want to know the weight and significance of each decision we make.
But such a search can leave us in despair – assuming things are bad because we’ve not found the one right answer, or because none of it matters to begin with.
A better approach is learning to find meaning in our everydayness while still trusting we have a part to play in the larger story God is telling.
For instance, meaning can be found in the simple joys of life and through our unique and personal contributions to our communities. It can make our day to enjoy a good meal or laugh with our friends. And whether we’re a CEO or drive-through operator, it’s a good day when we see the work of our hands blessing others, however small.
We might never see the part we play in God’s larger story. And this is okay. Meaning is found by simply being faithful to the truth, goodness, and beauty available to us everyday.
We expect too much of ourselves when we feel the weight of the world is on our shoulders to figure everything out.
Your daily decisions matter as God has given you a part to play in his story. But give yourself grace as you can only see this role dimly. Find meaning in your everydayness without the pressure of knowing how it all works together.
