The spirit of adventure is woven into our very souls. And we quickly start to die inside without regular opportunities to engage. But all too often we limit this to mere casual quests and miss the deeper adventures God is also calling us into.
A casual adventure might be traveling to a new country, rock climbing, or simply taking a weekend ride on our motorcycle. Whatever it looks like, there’s a thrill of stepping outside of our everyday lives and experiencing a taste of freedom and risk – putting ourselves to the test and delighting in the ecstasy discovered on the other side.
To be sure, there’s a place for these recreational adventures. They’re like a pit stop that refuels our weary souls. And we’re better men when these are a consistent part of our life.
At the same time, we must not confuse these with the critical adventures of life such as starting a new job, getting married, having kids, and the like. These are adventures of a higher order that also put us to the test and come with many priceless rewards. And it’s not enough to merely engage in casual adventures without also accepting the weightier undertakings of life.
Even still, there are epic adventures of the highest order. And here we’re called to participate in advancing God’s Kingdom of Light. More important even than our particular career, marriage, or family is faithfully answering God’s call for our life. To be fair, this is not excluding the former, but it’s not limited to these things either. An epic adventure sees all of life as an opportunity to live within the wild goodness of God and the story he is telling.
In the end, enjoy adventures of all sorts without limiting these to just recreational pursuits. Many life and epic adventures are calling your name as well.
