Some things we’re born knowing even before we know how to do it. It’s something we sense, though we cannot fully explain. And it compels us to act long before mastery arrives.

Certainly, this is the case as a child is learning to walk. Walking is written into his DNA. He knows he was made for this even though he has no words to explain it. And this deep, unspoken knowing drives him to keep getting up and learning to walk even after countless falls. And he will not give up until he has mastered the very thing he was created to do.

The calling God has placed deep in our souls often functions in the same way. We have a sense of who we’ve been called to be and what we’ve been called to do, but we might not be able to fully articulate it yet. All the same, there remains something that nags at our spirit, like a fire in our bones demanding expression.

Perhaps we make many attempts to align our outer world with this inner reality – to walk worthy of our calling – but each attempt looks like failure. We know this is not yet the fullness of our glory, but we start to wonder if maybe this is all just wishful thinking.  Life would definitely be easier if we just crawled around like everyone else. We’ve never “walked” before, so maybe this is just pride that motivates us now.

But as the child knows he was meant to walk and will not give up until he does, so we must do the same. We must press through seasons of uncertainty and perceived setbacks, not in rejection of wisdom or the humility to try different approaches, but with the inner resolve to stay true to our divine design.

God has given you the desires of your heart for a reason. And you were born knowing this is what you were created to do long before you knew how. Don’t lose heart when you fall down. This is your journey of formation.
