Flat tires are often just part of life in this world where things naturally break down and need repair. It’s not personal or sinister, just a hassle we must address. But sometimes there is more going on than what meets the eye, and it’s helpful to remember the reality of spiritual warfare.

On the one hand, unexpected car repairs, random technology glitches, embarrassing clothing mishaps, or the like are just inconveniences in our daily life.  We all experience them from time to time and there’s nothing malevolent in play.

But, in war, our enemy will use any and every means available to take us out. And it’s probably not a coincidence when the timing and intensity of these inconveniences occur at moments when we’re trying to advance the good.  They serve as a distraction or a means to deplete our energy. We’re less effective in our calling when we spend all our energy putting out these small fires.

Of course, these are not things we can just ignore. But understanding how they might be used to take us out helps us to resist. And, with Joseph, we learn to see how God can use for good what others intended for evil.

This doesn’t negate the hassles, struggles, and setbacks we must endure. But it does give us a larger frame to understand them. Perhaps God will use this flat tire to equip us with key insights, connections, or strategic positioning that allows us to be even more effective in our calling. Rather than being sidelined, we become dangerous for good – advancing the life and light God has given us.

In the end, be frustrated when you have to deal with the flat tires of life. But don’t let evil win by allowing this to become a distraction. Address the inconvenience and stay focused on your mission – trusting God is using even this for your good.
