We were created to bring more life and goodness into the world – to be generative with our very bodies, souls, and spirits. And we’ve become functionally impotent whenever this vitality has been denied or otherwise cutoff. We must first recognize and admit our impotence to overcome it and offer our life-giving strength once again.
To be impotent is to be powerless. While sexually this conveys our inability to get and maintain an erection sufficient for intercourse, our lack of power is even more hurtful and damaging outside of the bedroom, as our impotence leads to deep barrenness throughout our life and relationships.
For instance, this happens when we’re just going through the motions of our work without a spark of passion. When we don’t bring a creative energy to our work then it become stale and lifeless, and no longer a vehicle to advance God’s kingdom of light.
In the same way, our homes become just functional places to eat, sleep, and collect our mail without our generative strength to vitalize it. We must show up and offer our presence, blessings, and leadership for our family to flourish.
And even in matters of faith it’s not enough to merely check the box of Sunday morning attendance at worship. The life of faith is a life of great adventure and risk that requires our courageous strength. And we’ve missed out on the fullness of life Christ offers when faith has been robbed of its vitality.
Whatever it looks like, we miss the mark of our masculine design when we fail to rise to the occasion and offer our strength to bring life and goodness to others. And our impotence leaves the world a bit more dark and barren.
In the end, consider where your strength has failed and allow God to revive you again, because your strength is needed to be salt and light in this dark world.
