Many of us grew up being told we can do anything and be anyone. And this was generally well-meaning encouragement for us not to shortchange our potential. But it also makes it harder to choose something when everything is a choice. And it makes us wonder if we have anything unique to offer when anybody can do everything as well.
On the one hand, we might develop an inflated sense of self – believing we’re capable and entitled to do anything we want. And, unintentionally, this might set up an impossible standard for us to meet – leading to much internal anxiety and shame when we consistently fail to live up to these unrealistic expectations. Or, it might lead to increasing levels of frustration and rage when we can’t seem to make life work on our terms.
At the other extreme, we might be filled with insecurity and self-doubt. Who are we to make a meaningful impact in the world? We feel like an imposter – just a kid dressed up in his dad’s work clothes but without the inner substance to do the work. And here we hold back and play it safe because we don’t trust ourselves to offer anything of value or worth.
In reality, we can’t do everything or be anyone. Life comes with many limitations and some choices are made for us. To be sure, not everyone has what it takes to become a professional athlete or rocket scientist. And humbly accepting this frees us to explore and discover our own unique gifting.
We can’t do everything, but God has equipped us each with doing some things well. But we’re left merely chasing the wind or simply playing the parts others give us when we don’t know who we are.
In the end, it’s impossible to do everything. But you have a unique strength to offer. Remember who you are and use your strength to make an impact for good.
