It’s easy to become distracted by the latest global events, political elections, scandals, and the like. And these might indeed be important issues that warrant some of our time and attention. But however urgent they might seem in the moment, we must not allow ourselves to become so preoccupied with these outcomes that we fail to carry out the mission God has given us. We must continue to do our job to bring more life and goodness into the world, starting with those closest to us, even when the proverbial sky is falling otherwise.
To be sure, we cannot avoid the reality of the world around us. For better or worse, our lives will be shaped by the events of our generation. At the same time, we must learn to interpret these events from the perspective of God’s larger story and not the immediate cultural narratives given to us.
Jesus made it clear that his kingdom is not of this world. Of course, we should work for the good of our community, but we do so with our hope anchored ultimately in Christ and not the things of this life. And this frees us to continue our work in advancing God’s kingdom regardless of the particular outcomes of this life, whether we win or lose from human perspective.
As such, we weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice as they navigate life in this world. And we should allow space for our own hearts to do the same as we travel through the ups and downs that come our way. All the same, we should let none of this distract us from the work at hand.
Today we still have the responsibility to love our family, care for those God has placed in our path, and fulfill the unique calling he has given us. There’s a lot outside of our control, which can be scary. But this we can do.
In the end, stay informed without becoming distracted. God has given you a job to do that doesn’t depend on the current events of this world. Do your job.
