Life remains shallow without deep purpose. And without a solid identity our very being remains ungrounded and light. This lightness of being robs us of our true vitality and ability to make an impact for good.

Without sufficient substance to ground itself a feather floats wherever the wind takes it – completely dependent on the external circumstances around it. And the lightness of our being functions in a similar way. Everything looks good on the outside, but on the inside we’re empty and merely drifting without purposeful direction or meaning.

And this lightness sends us to great lengths to either fill the void or ignore it. In fact, many of our vices are desperate attempts to fill the relentless ache, while our constant busyness keeps us distracted.

In the end, this ontological lightness prevents us from generating more life and goodness in the world. We’re impotent without an adequate substance of being.

We gain substance in part by remembering our forgotten glory. As we remember and live as the true sons of God we discover an identity and purpose that gives us sufficient weight of being. No longer are we mere victims to our circumstances. Nor do we have to live in fear hiding behind our custom fig leaves.

Our substance of being opens the door for us to do work that matters, make meaningful connections, and live with a settled sense of inner worth. We miss the goodness God has called us to when we don’t develop our inner weight and significance.

Don’t ignore the lightness you feel or try to simply fill it with empty pursuits. Discover who God has called you to be and let the weightiness of your being generate more goodness throughout your life and relationships.
