There are things worth fighting for. And the warrior spirit within is ever ready to charge the battlefields of life. But this energy becomes misdirected and destructive without the guidance of a good king.

It does little good to fight without a strategy. We might win many battles and still lose the war.

We need a larger frame to understand what we’re fighting for. This helps us to channel our energy wisely and accomplish a greater good.

And it’s the king who provides this direction to the warrior.

For instance, the hothead soldier or athlete might very well be a force to be reckoned with.  But he would do well to submit to the guidance of his commanding officer or coach.

On his own he’s mostly a showoff who expends a lot of energy without accomplishing much lasting good. However, with the guidance of a wise king, his passion and strength make a meaningful contribution to a larger purpose.

To be sure, Christ is our ultimate king and our strength is properly channeled in advancing God’s kingdom of light.

And like the officer and coach, there’s a place for human kings as well. Perhaps a boss, pastor, or mentor can cast a vision and provide timely direction throughout our life and relationships.

There’s a sense in which we also access our own inner king – being guided by our deep values, principles, and beliefs.

In the end, the king provides needed leadership to harness the warrior’s strength and fight the good fight.

Today we have many fierce warriors, but fewer good kings. And without good kings, chaos and tyranny reign.

Don’t mindlessly charge the battlefields of life. Find the good kings and offer your strength in service of a greater good.

And when it’s time to become a king yourself, graciously offer your heart and wise guidance to the many warriors desperately needing a good man to lead them.
