Life comes with many curve balls – things we didn’t see coming that disrupt all our well-made plans. While we can’t predict and plan for every disruption, we can get and stay prepared as best we can.

For example, we understand the benefits of having insurance before we need it. While we hope nothing bad will ever happen, we also know getting and staying insured is a basic part of adulting.

Likewise, it’s good to have an emergency fund for life’s unexpected expenses. We can navigate the flat tires of life much better with even just a little preparation.

And this wisdom of preparation plays out in our soul care as well.

For instance, relationships are costly, and we don’t always know when a loved one will need a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. If we are depleted, or have never developed our inner life, we’re not prepared to be there for them in their time of need.

Building margin allows us to better deal with the unexpected demands of life and relationships.

And spiritually our preparation comes from walking daily with God. The thief of goodness is ever ready to take us out and is watching for any moment of weakness.

Staying connected with God empowers us to resist evil and to accomplish all the good things our faith prompts us to do.

But, to be clear, preparation is not prevention.

We cannot prepare enough to prevent the storms of life from coming. But we don’t have to get stuck in the rain without an umbrella either.

When we’re prepared we have what it takes to dance with the rain and continue to live life to the full.

Expect the unexpected and stay prepared.
