Our attention is pulled in a hundred different directions everyday – many important matters screaming for us to see and give ourselves to. And quickly we become overwhelmed and depleted from the constant noise and intrusions around us. There’s much wisdom in learning to live a quiet life – minding our own business and simply doing the work God has given us to do.
To be sure, there’s no shortage of people telling us how we should live our life – where we should focus our attention and the issues we should be concerned with.
And while some are simply pushing their own selfish agendas, many others are well meaning and they’re just trying to be helpful. But, either way, life becomes very crowded with so many people shouting in our ears.
Endeavoring to live a quiet life starts with remembering not every battle is ours to fight. There are many good things we rightly decline because it’s simply not our burden to bear. This is not to suggest the issue itself is unimportant, only that it’s not ours to own. And this allows us to quiet our lives by minding our own business, staying in our lane, and not becoming preoccupied by things outside of our control.
And freeing ourselves from the demands of others also frees us to focus on the work God has personally called us to do. We miss the good that’s ours to do when we try to do it all. Living a quiet life includes focusing on the work of our hands and not the countless other things that also need attention.
As this world gets increasingly louder, we must be all the more diligent in seeking a quiet life. This is not to check out or retreat from the world, but to quiet our hearts, minds, and souls to focus only on what God has given us to do.
In the end, resist the urge to add to the noise. Seek a quiet life by staying focused on the issues and work God has given you.
