Some days seem to be full of magic and joy, while other days are filled with heartache and struggle. But still many other days are altogether ordinary – nothing particularly exciting or dreadful, just business as usual. However, there’s much peace, comfort, and beauty even in these ordinary days.
Endless news cycles and entertainment on-demand tempts us into believing life should be one dramatic high after another. And to be sure, life comes with many demands and responsibilities that keep us on our toes. We might be in a season with very few dull moments.
But, in the normal ebb and flow of life, most days are by definition ordinary. Of course, what this looks like varies from one person to the next, but we all tend to settle into rhythms of everydayness.
And this is not a bad thing. It’s through the ordinary that we can catch our breath and recover from the highs and lows of life.
For instance, simply going to work and having our usual dinner routine at night, or perhaps a weekend of chores around the house, a walk around our local park, and a lazy night watching television together might not seem too exciting on surface. But there’s joy in these ordinary moments. It’s nice just to be without all the extraordinary happenings that often mark our days.
But many times we miss this beauty when we don’t allow our souls to settle and rest. In fact, we might assume something is wrong and life is boring when we’re not dealing with big events.
But nothing is wrong when life is just ordinary, and there’s wisdom in accepting this everydayness of life. This is not to become complacent, but it’s not expecting remarkable moments everyday either.
In the end, learn to accept and enjoy the beauty in the ordinary and mundane rhythms of everyday life.
