It’s nice to have weekends and holidays off from work. But this is not a luxury that comes with our role as husbands. As husbands, we’re always on mission to serve our wife and family in love.

Of course, this doesn’t mean there’s never time to rest or to have others pour into us. But it does mean not waiting on perfect conditions or fairness before fulfilling our responsibility to our home and marriage.

For instance, despite our long day at work, our words must still be seasoned with grace and understanding when we get home. And, more than this, we must regularly speak life into our family – cultivating the goodness and beauty God has given them to reveal.

To be sure, it’s tempting to expect our wife or others to do more when we’re going through a hard season. And perhaps they should. But this can never be an excuse to neglect the work God has given us to do. Buildings crumble when the cornerstone is not in place. And our marriage and family will likewise take a hit when we’re not occupying and executing the role God has given us as husbands.

And far from simply trying to do this alone, this is where our friends and trusted others become invaluable. They support us so we can continue supporting our wife and kids, and we will eventually crumble without this support. This is not a mission we can accomplish alone. And our lack of support will lead to more heartache and pain at home.

On the one hand, we’re always on mission for our family. And this requires us to be very strategic in caring for our own souls and surrounding ourselves with those who are able to pour life into us.

In the end, your mission as a husband requires you to always be on duty. And part of this duty is surrounding yourself with others so iron can sharpen iron.
