There are times more is required of us even though we’re giving our all. Perhaps we’ve overcommitted and need to create more breathing room in our life. But occasionally, God is trying to expand our capacity.
One of the rewards of growth is greater responsibility. More is expected of us as we grow.
Greater responsibility doesn’t always feel like a reward, but it’s simply the mark of growing maturity.
For instance, much more is expected from the senior in high school than from a toddler.
The senior has to navigate the ever-increasing demands of family and friends, school and possibly even work, while the toddler is concerned mainly with snacks and naptime.
There is a time to be a toddler. And a time in which more is required of us.
Giving a kid more responsibility is not being mean, but rather a way to honor his growth. We give him more because he’s capable of handling more.
God treats us in a similar way.
We want to cut back on responsibilities while he is inviting us into the more. He knows what we can handle and places us in situations to expand our capacity.
For example, we take on more duties in our work and our relationships also increase with complexity.
Initially, we’re overwhelmed. But eventually we settle into our new strength – resting, if even just for a bit, before graduating into our next cycle of growth.
Growth doesn’t come simply from staying busy. And often we need to refrain from adding any more to our plate.
But as God increases the demands of our life, it’s time to embrace our expanding capacity. God is inviting us to level up.
Don’t run from increased responsibilities. This is your mark of maturity as God honors your growth.
