Much more than general tips, techniques, and well wishes are needed in our journey of becoming. We need mentors to personally walk with us as we bring the many pieces of our life together.
A coach might help us to learn a new language, sport, or profession. And many breakthroughs in our life and relationships can be experienced with the help of a life coach.
In contrast, mentors are different. More than a particular skillset or breakthrough, mentors play the long game and are most concerned with who we are becoming.
Certainly, this involves a level of teaching and navigating the particulars of life, but the primary focus is the transformation of our very souls.
Mentors walk with us and guide us toward becoming the men God created us to be – seeing and calling out our greatness.
The orphan in us longs for this – for someone to see our worth and care for the deep questions of our heart.
Even still, we need a village.
Apart from God, no one person can meet all of our needs. And we only set ourselves up for much disappointment when we look to one person to do so, however well meaning.
Mentors are used by God in our journey of transformation, but never take the place of God.
As such, God might mentor us in an infinite number of ways.
This might be through a formal relationship with a respected man. Or casually as someone drops a timely nugget of wisdom.
A mentor is anyone who guides us toward our better.
And whatever the case, we must bring our open heart, desire, and questions to receive what is available.
Find your mentors and become all that God has for you.
