Certainly, deciding to take meaningful action might be a profound step of faith by itself. It can then catch us off guard when things seem to get worse. And naturally we start to question if we made the right decision. But it’s helpful to remember in these times that opposition often follows intention.
For instance, Joseph was sold into slavery shortly after God had given him dreams about future events. And soon after David was anointed king he was on Saul’s hit list. Even Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tested by the devil right after his baptism. Time and again we see opposition follows an intentional pursuit of the good. And this pattern holds true for our lives as well.
Perhaps we take a step to pursue a new career or calling. Or maybe we decide to take greater risks to cultivate the relationships we desire. Or we might simply try to be a blessing to others in small ways. Whatever it looks like, we sense this is God’s movement and not just ours. And this is why it can feel so disruptive when we hit opposition. Why are things so hard if God is with us?
Of course, at times the resistance we face is an indication that we’re going against the grain and it’s time to turn around. But we must not be too quick to jump to this interpretation. Many times the opposition we face is a sign that we’re on the right track. On the one hand, evil might be trying to steal, kill, and destroy our efforts to bring more life and goodness into the world. At the same time, God might be using this opposition as a type of initiation – refining us and preparing us for greater service.
We let evil win and we miss our opportunity to advance the good when we automatically assume opposition is a sign we’ve made the wrong decision.
In the end, expect things to heat up and get worse when you commit to doing the good. The opposition you face is often a sign you’re heading in the right direction. Carry on.
