How often do we find ourselves imagining a better life lies somewhere over the rainbow? And we then spend a lot of time, effort, and energy chasing the promise of this Oz – the chance to finally have the desires of our heart fulfilled. But perhaps, more often than not, what we long for is already with us.
Certainly, this was the case with the Scarecrow, Tin man and Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. The Scarecrow was on a quest for a brain, the Tin man a heart, and the Lion sought courage. But, by the end of their journey, they realized they had these qualities within them all along. Likewise, Dorothy was searching for a way to return home, and she too already possessed what she needed.
For our part, we’re often tempted to look for a new job, city, or relationship – believing this new person, place, or thing holds the promise of Oz for us. And, to be fair, like Abraham, there are times in which God is calling us out of the old and into the new. But, in our rush to chase Oz, we miss the beauty and goodness God has already placed in our lives.
This is true spiritually as well. While we tend to look for the external signs of God’s kingdom, Christ reminds us the Kingdom of God is already within us.
Of course, it’s possible the only way to discover this truth is through the yellow brick road. This is not an excuse to sin. But sometimes, like a young adult, we can only fully appreciate home after we’ve spent some time away.
Whatever the case, in all our searching, we must remember God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness. What’s lacking is often our eyes to see.
In the end, before chasing the next rainbow, stop and consider the possibility that God may have already given you the very thing you’re seeking.
