God has been thinking about us since before the creation of the world. And he desires for us to partner with him in the story he’s telling. But all too often sin has not only disconnected our heart from God and each other, but also from the deep desires God has placed within our own hearts. As such, desire is often one of the first things we have to recognize and recover as kingdom men, as this provides the fuel needed to bring more life and goodness into the world.

To be sure, for many, the issue is not a lack of desire per se, but rather the freedom of desire. In fact, their desires might be quite intense, but have been so enslaved to the things of this world that it robs them of their power to love. Like the prodigal son, their addiction blinds them to any life outside of the rat race of their own making, and leaves them chasing one empty pursuit after the next.

On the other hand, there are those who have grown apathetic. And what desires remain are only for the shallow junk, stuff, and things of this life. Like the wicked and lazy servant who was fearful of misusing what was given to him, perhaps in fear, they too have buried their desire.

Either way, we cannot be effective as kingdom men when we misuse or deny the desires God has given us. It’s only through recognizing and honoring the deep movements of our heart that we can clearly discern his calling for our life. He has created us with the intention of doing certain things well. And listening to these stirrings within us is part of how we answer his call.

In the end, kingdom men are called to rise to the occasion to bring more life and goodness into the world. And this starts with recognizing and cultivating the passionate desires God has given each of us.
