The value of practical things is clear and unquestionable, while non-practical things are often seen as frivolous and unnecessary luxuries that need justification. However, while things like beauty may not have immediate practical use, they still hold significant meaning and value.
On the one hand, some things are created primarily for their practicality, and any accompanying bells and whistles are indeed secondary luxuries. For example, the primary purpose of a vehicle is for driving. And its aesthetics are secondary to this function. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with driving in style, but the value of a vehicle is judge first by its ability to drive.
It’s harder to judge beauty in this same way because it’s function is not as evident. What is the purpose of a gorgeous sunset or a stunning musical composition? What are we accomplishing as we gaze on the beauty of another or travel for miles just to see a grand mountain range or taste a particular savory cuisine?
To be sure, it’s hard to claim we’re accomplishing anything in a utilitarian sense. But this doesn’t negate the value and meaning that beauty still holds. Beauty is an ultimate value worthy to be pursued for its own sake. We look at and delight in beauty simply because it is beautiful. No other justification is needed, just as Truth and Goodness don’t need any additional reasons to adopt.
At the same time, non-practical doesn’t mean pointless. Beauty comforts and inspires, transforms and reminds us of God’s glory beyond our depravity. We need beauty. It’s not mere luxury, as our souls will remain impoverished without it.
In the end, be practical without neglecting the value of beauty in your life. It holds its own meaning. Learn to enjoy it for its own sake.
