It’s easy to keep putting some things off for better time. But all too often many things are left undone waiting on this perfect time to arrive. Without rushing ahead, there’s wisdom in choosing to do today what’s important rather than waiting on someday. It’s true life comes with many demands. And we don’t always have the luxury to do what we want to do when we want to do it.
But it’s also true that procrastination becomes our all too familiar friend.
Sometimes this is simply because we fill our plates with busywork. We like the feeling of being important and not having the time to get around to certain projects allows us to maintain this image.
At other times, we want to make sure we have the adequate space to do a project well. And, certainly, some things are best tackled after a good night of sleep or during a season in which we have the time to dive deep and give it the attention it needs.
But many times our procrastination is a form of hiding and perhaps rebellion.
It’s tempting to just keep putting things off when we’re unsure we can do it well. The delay keeps us from being tested and exposed.
And sometimes we know what we should be doing, but we’re not ready to do it yet. And so we procrastinate. This allows us to say Yes to something without actually having to do the work. We’re always just getting around to it.
In the end, whether it’s working out, writing our book, or simply calling our friend, sometimes we have to commit to just doing it, or at least starting it, today.
The problem with someday is that it never arrives and many of the good things God has given us to do remain undone.
Whether today, tomorrow, or some precise day in the future, don’t let waiting on someday keep you from the good God has called you to do. Commit to it today and move ever closer towards God’s best.
