Life has a way of shaking things up and throwing all our well-made plans out of the window. This is often very stressful as we try to hold on to business as usual. But when we’re shaken in life it’s a good time to go back to our basics.
A musician learns scales as a basic building block for playing music. Likewise, an athlete learns several basic fundamental drills to play his sport well.
And each must regularly come back to these basics regardless of how far they advance.
This is true for us as well, particularly when all our normal ways of doing life have been disrupted.
For example, we find a job we love and make a career out of it. But perhaps outside of our control the organization closes, the standard procedures we were trained on have become outdated, or the profession itself moves in a direction we’re no longer okay with.
In these moments we can feel lost as what we’ve counted on for work has been turned upside down.
But these are the moments to get back to the basics.
What is the heart of our work and the deep purpose we’ve been called to?
We must go back to the basics of our deep purpose.
Like the musician and athlete, once we get back to our fundamentals we can discover creative new ways to express our gift.
The purpose God has given us is much deeper and suppler than any one form of expression.
And we only frustrate ourselves when we hold too tightly to how our purpose has been dressed in a particular season.
Remembering our foundation allows us to adapt and dress our purpose in countless different ways depending on the needs of each season.
When life strips you of business as usual, go back to the basics.
