We dedicate our lives to many good things. But not all things are created equal and we often live with divided loyalties. We must regularly consider where we pledge our ultimate allegiance.
For instance, we spend many hours a week pursuing careers and investing in the work that makes a difference in the world around us. And naturally, we want to see this calling God has placed in our hearts fulfilled.
At home, we pour ourselves into many hopes and dreams with the deep desire to see our families grow and experience the good life. And we want to grow old in peace as we watch them enter the legacy we built.
Likewise, we might swell with national pride and devote much time and energy into building a better society. We stay informed, debate, and actively vote in order to move toward a more perfect nation.
Somewhere in our consciousness we also remember we’re citizens of heaven waiting for the return of Jesus Christ to restore and make all things new.
There are many things in this life not as they should be and the coming of Christ is our hope and eager anticipation of the better he has for us.
But, for many of us, his coming exposes our divided allegiances.
We’re ambivalent.
While we know we’re suppose to be looking forward to his second coming, a huge part of us is still more concerned with things working out in this life.
And, again, it’s not that these are bad things. It’s simply a question of our foundational allegiance.
When we hold too tightly to the things of this world, even good things, we loose the true life Christ offers.
Faithfully serve all the things before you in this life. But pledge your ultimate allegiance to God and his kingdom. It’s here true life is found.
