The realities of war are nothing new. Tribes and nations have long gone to battle with each other. And to varying degrees, this is something each generation has to face. But while some of this is motivated by our own human pride and selfishness, it’s helpful to also remember we live in a world at war and this is not limited to our flesh and blood conflicts.
Of course, we all want to live peaceable lives every chance we get. But it’s also clear we don’t live in Mayberry. Not everyone has our best interest in mind. Nor is everyone satisfied with simply playing nice.
The world is not tame and wars provide a brutal reminder of this reality. And often more is going on in wars than what meets the eye as well.
On the surface, any number of complex sociopolitical dynamics might be involved. And wars might also be motivated by a leader’s quest for personal glory or to otherwise make a name for himself.
However true, we must not forget there are spiritual realities also in play. Spiritual forces of light and darkness are clashing in a battle over the human heart. Will we stay loyal to God or turn away and rebel?
This is also a violent war. And it’s naïve to simply put our heads in the sand, as we wonder why we can’t all just get along.
To be sure, the world is not tame and denying the realities of war doesn’t make them go away.
The peace, life, and goodness we desire must be fought for – in our personal life, communities and nations, and on many spiritual fronts as well.
The more we accept we live in a world at war the better prepared we are to play our part in advancing God’s kingdom throughout the world.
In the end, wars are brutal and part of life in this world. But don’t lose heart. Continue fighting the good fight God has given you – bringing more life and goodness into the world.
