A tree is known by the fruit it produces. And the same is true throughout our life and relationships. Discerning the fruit allows us to make wise choices on our path forward.
For example, an apple tree produces apples, and it would be foolish to expect it to do otherwise. And there’s no point of getting mad at the apple tree if we want a different fruit. We must find a different tree if we want something other than apples.
Likewise, it’s time to consider what needs to change when our work consistently leaves us frustrated and depleted. And while this doesn’t mean changing jobs per se, something has to give when the fruit of our work is soul killing.
And relationally it’s time for a change when bitterness and resentment are growing in our hearts. Of course, all relationships require work. And there’s no expectation that things will always be smooth sailing. But even during difficult times we should discern if more love, joy, and peace are being produced, or if it’s discord, contempt, and division. And something needs to change when good fruit is not being produced.
And this can play out in our diet and exercise, hobbies, time with our friends, and the like.
What fruit is being produced on our current path?
Whatever it looks like, it’s time to do something different when our life is not producing the outcomes we desire. And it’s foolish to keep doing the same thing while expecting a different result.
And, to be fair, often it’s not a new tree that we need. Rather we need to cultivate the tree we do have – allowing it to produce quality, good fruit instead of bad fruit due to our neglect.
In the end, discern the fruit being produced throughout your life and relationships and adjust accordingly. It’s time to do something different when you want a different outcome than what you’re currently getting.
