Life is full of change – constantly moving from one season to the next. And in many ways, this helps us to keep moving forward and not get stuck. At the same time, we need constants to hold on to. And the evergreen provides us with a consistent reminder of life even as we go through barren seasons.
To be sure, there’s a beauty to the changing of seasons – seeing leaves embrace their autumn hue before the long winter months, and bud with new life in the spring just in time for the joy of summer fruit.
There’s comfort and hope in these rhythms of life – allowing us to rest in the changes knowing our seasons come and go.
But, as much as we accept these rhythms of change, there’s value in having things in our life that do not change. And evergreens in our life give us these constants.
Evergreens remain steady and true despite the seasons of change otherwise. When all the other trees have stripped bare for the winter, the evergreen stands in sharp contrast still donning its emerald green. Of course, they have their own rhythms of change and growth, but this is less obvious or dependent on external factors.
For instance, our marriage and lifelong friendships, our faith and guiding principles might all serve as evergreens in our life. To be fair, whatever remains constant and true, however big or small, can serve as an evergreen and witness of the life than endures.
Our souls can bear many things, but we still need regular reminders that life continues even when everything around us is changing, and especially when life is cold, dark, and barren. It’s easy to lose heart without some evergreens to anchor our souls
In the end, enjoy the many changing seasons throughout your life and relationships. And also learn to appreciate the evergreens that provide a constant reminder of the life that remains.
