Many deep desires stir in our hearts, and we find ourselves attracted to some things more so than others. And we might never fully understand why our hearts are captivated the way they are. But it’s possible God is at work behind our desires to work out opportunities for his glory to be revealed.
For instance, this was the case with Samson. Much to the dismay of his parents, Samson was attracted to Philistine women. But neither understood that God was at work in this to work out his plan against the Philistines.
And God might be at work in similar ways when we find ourselves attracted to our Delilah as well.
For example, perhaps our attraction to our wife is not altogether random. Maybe God had his hand in stirring our feelings for each other – bringing us together to accomplish some aspect of his larger purpose for our lives.
This might be true in our friendships as well. Perhaps God drew us to our friends to bridge divides, strengthen our communities, and shine as lights for others to see.
Likewise, our insatiable curiosity, quirky interests, and passionate desires throughout life might not be random either. These are often ways the Spirit gets our attention and motivates us to bring more life and goodness into the world.
All the same, like with Samson’s parents, our desires might not make sense to others or even ourselves. And while it’s helpful to ponder what God might be up to through the various fascinations of our heart, we might never see the full picture.
Of course, honoring the desire is not an excuse to engage in sinful pursuits. And we must still pursue holy expressions even when we don’t understand the core nature of our attractions. But we pursue in faith – trusting God can use even the mysterious stirrings of our heart for his glory.
In the end, remember your desires might not be random even when they don’t make sense. God might use your Delilah to create an opportunity for his glory to be displayed.
