Today decisions are made that will shape our tomorrow. And while we don’t know what the future will hold, we’re laying the foundation by the choices we make today. As such, we become wise builders of our future by being good stewards of how we handle this very day.
To be sure, we should not be so worried about the future that we miss the important matters of today. There’s wisdom in simply dealing with the problems of today and letting the future deal with the concerns of tomorrow.
At the same time, this is not to become so focused on today’s issues that we neglect our responsibility to father that which is coming after us.
For instance, parents have the duty to raise their children and seek their best long-term interest even when it comes with many personal costs. And this is similar to the responsibility we all have in building our future.
The work we do, the relationships we forge, and the culture we build today all influence what tomorrow will become.
This is not for us to take total responsibility for how things will turn out. Like with parenting, kids still have their part to play in who they become. But the significance of parents in shaping the character of their kids cannot be underestimated either.
What choices are you making today to allow the world to become more beautiful, humane, and just? And what decisions need to be made for the children of God to live with greater freedom, power, and love – shining like a light in a dark world?
Neglected children have to contend with many problems later in life. And the same is true when we neglect our duty to the future.
In the end, today’s choices shape tomorrow’s future. Don’t let worry and fear overwhelm you. But be wise in the decisions that you make as you build your future one choice at a time.
