Sometimes we intentionally go without. But generally speaking, we feed and care for our bodies everyday. And our souls need the same level of daily nourishment in order to thrive.
When life is busy we might not have the time to prepare a home cooked meal. But typically we still find something to eat throughout the day, even if it’s not the healthiest of options.
All the same, a diet exclusively of junk food eventually catches up with us, and our health and wellbeing soon starts to suffer.
And our souls suffer in a similar way.
Many of the vices we engage are a type of junk food for our malnourished souls. We settle for whatever we can get when we don’t take the time to develop a healthy diet.
Perhaps we’re inclined to drink too much or over eat, entertain certain fantasies, or simply numb out scrolling through social media or mindlessly watching one show after another.
We often assume these are just harmless coping strategies. And, to be sure, like junk food, when only done occasionally they’re probably not that big of a deal.
But problems start to arise when this becomes our only diet.
We eventually loose our vitality and spark when we neglect the true nourishment our souls need. We might still go through the motions of life, but without a deep sense of purpose and vigor.
And this not only takes us out, we’re unable to be there for others as well. We can’t offer them life and goodness when we’re depleted.
And so we must find ways to feed and truly nourish our souls everyday.
This might start with simply taking a walk outside, enjoying coffee with a friend, taking a nap, or enjoying movies, shows, and music that actually inspire and uplift the soul.
Whatever it looks like, we need this daily nourishment.
Don’t neglect the daily care of your soul. Find nourishment everyday to live life to the full.
