Great moments are still just a moment. We want to hold on, but time marches forward with or without our permission. And so we find ourselves needing to come back time and again to feast on goodness and beauty because just once is never enough.
Of course, we understand this principle in relation to food. On the one hand, a gourmet meal might be completely satisfying and lacking nothing at the moment. But soon we get hungry again and we’re ready for yet another meal.
In the same way, one adventure is not enough, one glance at beauty doesn’t forever quench our thirst, nor does one awesome night out with our wife or friends stop us from still wanting more. In many ways, like our bodies, our souls are also insatiable. However grateful we might be for our first serving, there remains a constant desire for more.
To be sure, many become preoccupied in always searching for this more – desperately chasing one buzz after another. And while this is often a shallow and misdirected pursuit of our desires, the answer is not to stop wanting so much. The answer is in taking our desires deeper and remembering who they’re ultimately pointing us toward.
For example, our constant need for food helps to remind us that God is our ultimate provider. As such, we don’t have to settle for mere junk food, but rather we can keep our eyes on God who will give us our daily bread.
Likewise, we can bring our hunger and thirst for adventure and beauty, intimacy and meaningful connections to God – grateful for what we’ve already received and fully trusting he will continue bringing us life to the full.
In the end, there’s no shame in wanting to experience goodness and witness beauty time and again. Once is never enough and this is by design. Let this desire expand your soul to receive more of the life God has for you.
