Perhaps we have a vision to do many great things. And we need this vision to sustain us through dark days. But we must also not forget to start where we are, and not where we want to be – humbly giving what we have today even as we live with an eager anticipation of more to come.
To be sure, we need vision to inspire us to get going. But it’s easy to lose heart when we don’t see the possibility of our dream coming true today. The problem is not with our vision, but in our humility to play the long game.
For instance, a baker might currently work in another industry but dreams of opening his own shop one day. All the same, the thought of leaving his stable income to start a shop seems overwhelming. As such, he resigns himself to keep waiting for his opportune time, uncertain that it will ever come.
A better approach is simply to start with what he has today. If he has the gift of baking then he can generously offer this gift to family, friends, and community without the need of having a fully operational shop per se. In time this has the potential to grow into something more. And he’s not living by faith when he neglects the good he can do today while waiting on his future vision to be realized.
In short, we don’t have to give up our dream for more, but in the meantime we should consider what we’re able to do today. This is part of our wise and faithful stewardship – using what we have rather than waiting on more before we act.
In the end, dream big and remain humble – giving what you have today without waiting on the perfect realization of your vision that’s still to come.
