Life with God regularly calls us into the frontier – an adventure into the unknown and with no set formulas to follow. Few accept this, in part because it’s a life of faith that appears foolish from a human perspective. But to those who hear and answer, there is no other way, despite its apparent craziness.
Of course, it’s tempting to live a safe, quiet, and predictable life – Hobbits merely staying in the shire as it were. But a meaningful life doesn’t require us to travel the world or to build a public platform either.
Answering God’s call for our life is less about the externals and more about our heart of faith that informs the decisions we make. Whether we’re onstage or behind the scenes, serving in the inner city or out on a farm somewhere, are we singing the song that God has placed on our hearts?
And as we commit to singing, will we endure during those dark days? Like the Children of Israel, will we be tempted to go back to Egypt where life is at least known and predictable? Or like Noah, will we continue building the Ark God has called us to build even when everyone doubts us and is making fun of our efforts?
God’s call for our lives demands a lot of us, whether it means changing jobs, moving cities, or adopting a lifestyle that seems counter-cultural. But while we might wonder how things are going to work out, by faith we are convinced that God is working things out and there’s no going back. To go back would grieve our spirits, and God’s, and this is much worse than whatever temporary hardships we might otherwise face.
In the end, God has placed a song on your heart for you to sing. Continue to sing this song faithfully, even when the road ahead is narrow, challenging, and unpopular.
