It’s easy to love when our efforts are appreciated. We will freely pour ourselves out when others clearly desire and welcome what we offer. But relentless love gives what is needed even when it’s not seen, valued, or respected.
A mother’s love is relentless.
She loves despite the many thankless hours spent caring for us. And regardless of how far we run or how bad we mess things up, she still wants the best for us and will offer herself time and again in countless ways.
And a mother’s love is only a dim picture of God’s love. He is relentless in his pursuit of us even when we show contempt and utter disregard for him.
For instance, Christ loved us even as he was mocked, spat upon, and hung on a cross. And he models for us the love we aspire to.
Sometimes people struggle to receive love, perhaps due to their own pain and suffering, or deep doubts that our love can actually be trusted. And they might even criticize and dismiss our attempts to love them well.
We’re tempted in these moments to withdraw our efforts. Why keep trying to love when it’s clear our efforts are not welcomed?
Like God (and our mothers) we must remember our love is based on who we are and not the actions of the other. We love because we are becoming love.
Relentless love does not force its way nor is it demanding. But it also does not give up.
It sees the need and continues to give of itself despite the pushback or rejection that might come.
This isn’t easy. And most wouldn’t blame us if we did give up.
But our relentless love has the ability to breakthrough many inner barriers and open the door to much healing, beauty, and joy. And this is worth the effort.
Be relentless in your love.
