Every choice comes with a cost. To turn left means we miss whatever is to the right. And to say yes to one opportunity means we’re saying no to others.
While kids might struggle to understand the cost of their decisions, most adults understand there is a price to pay.
For instance, we cannot save our money and buy a new vehicle at the same time. To buy a new vehicle comes at the cost of our hard earned money. And if we decide we want to hold on to our money, then we give up the joys of having a new vehicle.
A similar dynamic plays out in all our decisions.
Whether we decide to stay single or marry, have children or not, or pursue a particular career over another, every choice comes with a cost.
On some level we understand this, but we often forget. Or, perhaps we just don’t want to own the cost of our decisions.
But a cost is paid either way. And when we don’t count the cost beforehand, we’re only setting ourselves up to be blindsided later.
Blame, disappointment, and anger are more likely when we finally realize we cannot have our cake and eat it too.
On the other hand, when we accept the cost, we’re able to make informed decisions going forward.
There is still a sacrifice, but there is also joy in the meaningful decisions we make.
We’re no longer the little kid who just wants all the benefits without paying the price. We now have the maturity to own our choices and its accompanying price tag.
This forces us to make many hard and intentional decisions. But it also allows us to make choices meaningful to our story and live without regrets later.
Count the cost of your choices and choose wisely.
