Some days we hit a home run. And certainly these are to be celebrated. But on most days a base hit is good enough. And these too hold an honored place in our story.
To be sure, it’s quite the thrill whenever we hit one out of the park – whether it’s getting a big win at work, enjoying the perfect day with our wife and kids, basking in the afterglow of wall-socket sex, or the like.
And it’s only right to enjoy these moments to the full when they come.
However, most of life is not lived at this upper extreme and most days are fairly routine and normal.
For instance, our project at work might get the job done, but it might not receive much recognition or win any awards.
And while potentially busy and stressful, most days with our family remain pretty mundane and uneventful.
Likewise, sex can still be completely satisfying even when there are no fireworks.
By definition, in order for something to be extraordinary there must be regular doses of simply the ordinary. And we only set ourselves up for disappointment when we expect the exceptional every time.
This is not to suggest settling for the mediocre. All too often we’ve resigned ourselves to complacency when there’s more goodness available.
But there’s wisdom in accepting the good enough – the normal, ordinary, everydayness of life.
By all means, we should continue to grow and raise our baseline expectations whenever possible. If we’re consistently hitting homeruns it’s probably time to move from little league into the majors.
But most days we can rest in the good enough and simply enjoy the fairly unexciting rhythms of life.
This frees us from the burden of expecting life to be one perpetual highlight reel and feeling like a failure when it’s not.
Find peace in accepting the good enough of everyday living.
