The road getting from here to there is sometimes short and quick, while at other times it’s long and requires much patience. But we all experience moments of transition – when we’re in the threshold between what was and what is still to come – and it’s good to honor these moments however quick or slow they progress.
On the one hand, we often live life at such a fast pace that we’re not usually aware of the many transitions we make in a given day or over the course of our life. We often look up and wonder how we got to where we are.
At other times, we spend a lot of energy lamenting that we’re not where we want to be. And again we miss the journey as our focus remains on what we don’t have.
While we cannot always speed up or slow down the transitions of life, we can be aware and mark them all the same.
Graduations, weddings, births, and funerals all mark significant threshold moments – moments in which we’re moving from one reality into a new one. And typically big life events as such come with various rituals to help us make these transitions.
But there are also everyday thresholds. For example, going to bed and waking up, leaving the house and coming home, gearing up for a sexual encounter and the recovery afterwards, and simply learning something new.
Throughout our day we’re constantly moving in and out of different realms of being. And while each one doesn’t need a grand ritual per se, it’s helpful to at least be aware of the transitions we’re making.
This allows our souls to catch up and be fully present wherever we are. We’re leaving something behind that needs to be honored, while we’re also entering something new that deserves our wholehearted presence.
In the end, life is full of transitions. And being aware of these threshold moments gives you greater freedom and meaning as you move into new realities throughout your life and relationships.
