Life is filled with many demands and responsibilities – from work and family, to bills and endless social obligations. It seems at every turn something more is required of us. And it’s in these moments we need a break – a moment of ecstasy, free from the constant demands and burdens around us.

Of course, there are many duties we simply can’t neglect. And it would be immature to disregard them merely to pursue our own selfish interest.

But all too often we take on a heavier burden than what’s wise to carry. And many of our vices are actually our souls crying out for relief and more life.

We need regular moments in which we can step outside of our everydayness and experience times of deep joy and delight.

This is not to check out, become numb, or otherwise distracted. We’re still very much aware of and present to the realities of our life. But it is taking a meaningful break to simply enjoy the flow of life itself.

In many ways, this is similar to play, which is why sexual play often draws us in so powerfully. During sex we get to strip off all our other roles and responsibilities and simply get to drink deeply of this moment of pleasure and delight.

In the end, whether through sex, a game of ball with our friends, or diving deep into some other interest, we need these moments to just be and enjoy life without feeling burdened to accomplish anything in particular.

It remains true we cannot pour water out of an empty cup. And these times of play and ecstasy help to refresh our souls. We become ineffective without them.

Take responsibility in caring for your soul by regularly stepping away from your burdens and learn to simply enjoy life itself.
