Physical constipation is uncomfortable and can lead to more serious medical conditions. Our health depends on regularly relieving ourselves of built up waste. And good soul care also includes a frequent cleaning out of our inner world.

The body is designed to take in food, process it, and then eliminate the waste.

And the soul functions in a similar way. But all too often we suffer from constipation of the soul by not finding outlets to work through and clean out all that our souls are processing.

A failure to thrive might be because we’re so backed up internally. We can get things flowing again by working it out, writing it out, and talking it out.

Work It Out

Sometimes we just need to get moving, preferably outside. If we spend most of our day sitting and indoors, hitting the gym or going for a walk outside can do wonders.

The body has its own wisdom. And as we engage it, the soul can process things that the mind cannot process alone. Working out clears the mind and allows the wisdom of the body to also clean out the soul.

And simply being in nature can do this as well. Nature has a way of speaking and reorganizing our inner world – bringing a clarifying perspective on the world and our place in it.

Write It Out

Sometimes we need words to express the deep movements of our soul.

Journaling has many benefits in its own right. And it also provides an opportunity to process and name the many things that affect our souls.

It may be a daily habit, or just a few times a week and more often around major events.

But whatever the rhythm, journaling allows the soul to express itself in ways that are otherwise backed up.

Talk It Out

While we can process a lot privately, there comes a time when the soul needs to connect with another.

Talking with a trusted friend, mentor, or coach allows someone to witness and reflect back the movements of our heart.

Even when there are no pithy insights or revelations to offer, simply sharing our story with another brings freedom and relief. We are lighter and more energized when we don’t have to carry our load alone.

Don’t let internal sluggishness and constipation of the soul become a normal way of life.

Get things moving again by working it out, writing it out, and talking it out.

Your soul will thank you, as will those around you.
