We all come in many different shapes and sizes, colors and experiences. And while this gives us each a unique presence in the world, it’s our heart that matters more than any of our external trappings. We are united in Christ and must practice living in the truth of this reality.

Of course, we have many different social distinctions and physical characteristics that allow us to relate to certain people more than others.

And following Christ doesn’t altogether eliminate these different points of connection. The family of God is still made up of males and females, Blacks and Whites, the rich, the poor, and the like. And to love well we must consider the unique lived experiences of each individual. Love is particular and does not overlook the external realities of the beloved.

At the same time, in Christ, these distinctions are no longer the most important thing about us. It’s the content of our characteror heart that matters the most.

The Spirit gives us the eyes to see each other as family, and, at the very least, created in the image of God. As such, we can find connection and seek the good for everyone around.

There’s more to us than what meets the eye. And we miss the fullness of who God has created us to be when we can’t see passed our surface presentations.

This is similar to judging a book by its cover rather than by the content of its pages.

We must take the time to discover our deepest self, and that of each other as well.

And we fail in our duty to love and living in the unity Christ has given us when we let our surface differences divide us.

In the end, celebrate those things that make us distinct. And remember to also look beyond the surface to the content of our character. It’s our heart that matters more than any of our external trappings.
