The human heart holds many treasures deep beneath the surface. And it takes time and intentionality to draw them out. We miss great riches when we live on the surface and don’t dive into the deep waters of the soul.
We all want to be known and fully accepted in the deepest parts of our being. But our day-to-day lives often don’t create the space to go deep.
We busily work and pay bills as we continually play catch up with family and friends.
And simply touching base with each other often takes much effort in the middle of hard seasons when we’re already stretched thin.
All the same, extended time together is needed to descend into the depths of the soul.
Deep sea diving requires more time and planning than a mere casual swim on the surface. But there are also many hidden treasures in the deep that make this effort worth it.
There’s a lot to enjoy on the surface. And, to be fair, most of our interactions will likely take place here.
Everyone is not safe to share the depths of our heart with. And the demands of life don’t allow for deep dives in every interaction even with those who have been vetted.
But the problem comes when there are not regular times to frequent the deep. We get so used to casual connections that our life and relationships all become shallow.
We forget how to go deep and that there’s even more to us to discover and reveal.
For instance, texts, emails, and phone calls are all great ways to stay in touch. But this doesn’t replaced extended face time with each other.
Uninterrupted quality time together gives us access to the depths of our souls we’d miss otherwise.
Enjoy all the many ways to connect on the surface. But don’t forget to dive into the deep waters and discover the hidden treasures of your soul as well.
