Some days are dark and we’re not quite sure what to do next. And it’s tempting in these moments to just give up, as we can no longer count on what used to be normal. But we find our way forward by simply doing the next right thing.

Certainly, there’s an ease to life when everything is going according to plan. And whether it’s our work, our loved ones, or even our health, it’s easy to take the constants in our life for granted.

Sudden changes can then leave us disorientated. And this is also true when life simply becomes overwhelming and we lose our sense of clarity. Light becomes darkness when we no longer have our usual anchors.

But, rather than letting this darkness and despair take us out, we find our way back toward the light by just doing the next right thing. And then again and again, as many times as necessary until we find our momentum again.

For instance, what do we do when a loved one gets sick or dies? Or how do we move forward when we’re denied job opportunities or when all our hard work doesn’t seem to have the return we expected? And what do we do when we’re confronted with such profound heartaches and tragedies in our communities every day?

In short, we simply do the next right thing.

We don’t have to have all the answers or understand how everything is working together. We just have to keep showing up and taking the next step.

And the pressure to have it all figured out first tends to leave us paralyzed.

In the end, life is often filled with moments of darkness and confusion when all our norms are thrown out the window. Take a deep breath and keep doing the next right thing. This is your path back to the light.
