Sexual energy is a powerful force that can bring life and healing, but also death and destruction. And we must discern between its light side and dark side in order to use the sexual force within us for good.
The Dark Side
The dark side of sexuality denies the divine dignity in others and even ourselves. People are merely objects used for one’s own gratification, and a person might even feel compulsively drawn to certain behaviors against their own conscious will.
At low levels, expressions may be unintentionally careless and leave a person feeling much regret and shame. While at higher levels, the dark force of sexuality can lead to coercion and abuse, and eventually to becoming outright violent in expressions of rage and hostility.
Ultimately, the dark side of sexuality brings death, as it separates us from meaningful connections with others, God, and also ourselves.
The Light Side
The light side of sexuality remembers our inner dignity and honors our embodied selves. It seeks to draw us into deeper union with what is true, good, and beautiful and makes palpable our expressions of love.
Initially, this is the most basic acknowledgment of each other’s humanity and respect of freedom. And at its upper limits, an individual not only practices making love but also becomes love.
The light force of sexuality is creative, passionate, and generous. And in the end, it brings greater expressions of life and love – connecting us deeper with God, others, and ourselves.
Anyone can slide into the dark side. But we must intentionally choose the path of light.
And the light grows as we practice using the force for good.
The sexual force is great. Wield it wisely and bring more light and love throughout your life and relationships.
