Many things we bicker about don’t matter in the long run. Our fights are mostly about our own pride, preferences, and conveniences. However, there are some things worth fighting for and we must courageously show up to resist evil and advance the good.
To be sure, not every battle is ours to fight. But there comes a point when we can no longer stand by and watch the good God has given us to be violated and destroyed.
In fact, he’s given us our strength for this very reason – to protect our communities and relationships from harm.
And we dishonor God when we use our strength either selfishly to push our own agenda or not at all as we passively let the thief of goodness steal God’s best for us.
In the end, goodness must be fought for. And every good story reminds us of this – the hero must answer the call and overcome many obstacles in order to bring good back to his people.
And this is no different for each of us.
For instance, a healthy marriage and a passionate sex life are worth fighting for. The hearts of our kids are worth fighting for. And communities that are just, humane, and beautiful are worth fighting for.
In each of these cases, we’re fighting for a vision of God’s best.
There are many personal benefits to be sure. But the fight is not for us per se. Rather, we’re answering the higher call God has given us.
And so we keep showing up and enduring – cunning yet harmless as we advance the good. But also more than mere assertiveness, we’re willing to let our love be aggressive as needed – proactively disrupting the status quo.
Let your love be evident as you courageously fight those battles worth fighting for.
