God delights in us without fail – not because of anything we have done, but simply for who we are. But those around us often let us down, making it easy to forget our inherent worth.

We all enjoy being a special person in someone’s life – to know we are loved for just being our very selves. It makes us smile to know someone is thinking about us, proud of us, and wants to be with us. However, being the limited humans we are, we do not consistently offer this blessing to each other. The demands (and maybe the distractions) of life get the best of us and we do not regularly bless those around us for who they are. Without regular reminders of our value, we might be tempted to try harder to win the approval of others. Or, we might give up and live under a quiet shadow of shame.

Our relentless pursuits to be seen as the good guy, the fun guy, the smart guy, or the like, are likely driven by our desire to be deeply valued. When we are not assured of our own inherent worth, we keep trying harder to prove it to others and ourselves. At other times, we are left wondering and shame sneaks in. Something must be wrong with me. If I were truly loved and valued others would say so and want to be with me.

Even when others let us down, we must find ways to remember that we are blessed. God communicates his love toward us in infinite ways, and our blessing might come from many unexpected sources. Open the eyes of your heart.

God made you with all your quirks and whimsy ways and he is pleased. Remember and do not forget – you are blessed.
