There’s much to do, there’s work on every hand. And while we’ve been called to participate in the larger good, the burden is not on us to do everything. We have our part to play and must faithfully own this small part.
Members of the Armed Forces voluntarily surrender their personal agendas for a greater good. They willingly submit their individual preferences to protect and defend the nation.
And we can see a similar dynamic play out on sports teams and orchestras. Each individual serves a purpose beyond themselves.
In each of these cases, the larger mission is not dependent on one individual doing everything, but on each individual doing something.
We know we’ve been called to use our strength for a purpose beyond ourselves. Our life is not just about us.
But it can be difficult to know how to best serve when faced with the many challenges of life. Perhaps we see clearly the greater good, but also feel completely overwhelmed at the enormity of the task.
It’s been said the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. And this wisdom applies here as well.
It’s not our individual burden to eat the whole elephant – to save the world whether spiritually or as it relates to the countless social ills we face.
But as we own our individual parts we’re taking small bites out of the larger issues.
What’s the assignment you’ve been given? What position do you play? How does your individual instrument add to the chorus of others to bring about change
When we try to do everything we end up doing nothing. But we serve the greater good best by staying focus on and owning our something.
Be faithful to the role given to you – trusting your small part is contributing to the larger story of redemption God is telling.
