The landscape around us is constantly changing. Many things come and go and within a few years we’re easily surprised at just how much things are different. But as much as things are changing, there are things that also remain the same. And we need both realities to fully appreciate the rhythms of life and to live to the full.

For instance, change allows us to grow and mature. It keeps us from getting stuck.

Without change, we become stagnant and there’s no room to consider new approaches or to learn from past mistakes.

Change allows us to consistently adjust to the many complex realities of life. And it’s change that allows us to say we’re not who we used to be, and our best is still yet to come.

While all of this is true, we still need a reliable anchor for our souls. And it’s in having certain things to remain stable that gives us a solid place to stand when everything else around us is changing.

This might be certain values or bedrock truths, for example.

Without stability, our life is thrown into chaos. There’s no certainty and there’s nothing we can count on because everything is in a constant state of flux.

It’s stability that allows us to say this is who God has created us to be, regardless of public opinion and current trends of our day.

In the end, we need both. The river of change is allowed to flow only because of the faithful steadiness of the riverbank.

We suffocate without change. And we lose our direction and purpose in life without some things remaining the same.

Learn to see the need for change and stability throughout your life and relationships. Embracing both allows you to discover the rhythms needed to live life to the full.
