Despite all our well-made plans, life is filled with many unexpected twists and turns. We are regularly faced with disruptions that alter our day and maybe even the very course of our lives. These divine disruptions make our life and forge our souls.

In big and small ways we all plan. We plan to go to work and maybe to meet a friend for coffee. Perhaps we plan to get married, raise a family, or to travel abroad.

But regardless of how well we plan, we are met with many unexpected surprises along the way.

Traffic gets delayed, we develop a medical condition, we encounter a “random” stranger, or any number of other interruptions.

In the moment, these interruptions are frustrating to say the least. Why now! My plans are being turned upside down!

However, with the eyes of faith, we can see these as divine disruptions.

God allows interruptions to come our way to remind us of his presence in our daily lives. All too often we are so busy with our own plans that we forget to live life with God.

The disruption is our invitation to wake up.

What is God up to in this moment? Is this an opportunity for me to exercise my faith or to grow in my practice of love? Have I merely been pushing my own agenda or is my hope fully anchored in God’s?

Waking up does not make the interruption any less disruptive. However, it does help us to better interpret and know how to respond.

Instead of redoubling our efforts to make life work on our terms, we trust God is directing our steps and is calling us into something greater.

And rather than desperately trying to avoid the disruptions, we learn to accept them as God’s way to refine our souls and bring us into the fullness of life.
