Life doesn’t accept defeat. It emerges time and again regardless of the calamities that come. The old dies and the new is born, with life finding a way even through the bleakest of seasons.
It’s hard to imagine recovering from significant setbacks – catastrophic loss, heart wrenching betrayal, and major illnesses to name only a few. Life as we once knew it is over and it’s easy to give into despair and assume all is loss. But life keeps showing up even through the most devastating of circumstances.
Nature reminds us of this. It returns even after massive destruction. For instance, wildlife is finding a way to thrive even after the Chernobyl nuclear accident. And certainly the resurrection of Jesus Christ speaks to this reality. Death did not have the final say as Jesus rose from the grave on Easter morning – defeating death and giving the ultimate victory to life. This is a spiritual and practical truth.
On the one hand, we no longer have to fear death. Through Christ we too have the victory over death and get to live with him forever. At the same time, knowing that life ultimately wins gives us the eyes to watch for the coming of spring throughout our life and relationships. Things might never be the same again, but new life emerges all the same.
After death and heartaches, disappointments and setbacks – life will find a way to break through again and again. Life will not be defeated. But we must have the eyes to see and receive – rejecting despair and ever living in the hope of new life.
Grieve loss and destruction. But rest in the hope that life finds a way.
