Perhaps getting distracted is one of our greatest challenges in accomplishing what God has called us to do. Many things fight for our attention and we find ourselves down one rabbit hole after another. To live by faith requires us to stay focused.

Daily we’re faced with many important and interesting stories that capture our attention. While many are negative and drama filled, many others highlight real needs and efforts to make things better in our communities.

But it remains true that not every battle is ours to fight. And many good things simply become distractions.

For instance, generally speaking, it’s good to be an informed citizen and to do our part in advancing sound public policies throughout our communities and society.

But spending hours on end researching and debating those who differ from us is probably not the best use of time for most of us.

We’ve been called to focus our talents and abilities in other areas. And we neglect this calling when other things distract us, however well meaning.

This is not to suggest that we cannot hold multiple interests and in our time off invest in other areas.

But it is a reminder to keep clear the deep purpose that God has called us to.

The thief of goodness seeks to steal, kill, and destroy the good God has given us to do. And many times this is accomplished through the subtlety of distractions.

We must regularly bring ourselves back to what is ours to do.

And this is how we live by faith before God – faithfully accomplishing the mission he has given us, and not getting distracted by other matters.

Watch for the many distractions that take you off course. Stay focused on the good God has called you to do and get back to work.
